How might we change the role of food inside SLA Reflection -Wynn Geary

Posted by Wynn Geary in MUSEXP-009 on
Wynn- “How might we change the role of food inside SLA”. If you don’t bring your food to school you essentially have to options of how to get lunch. 1. A school lunch or 2. The school store. These are both unfortunately very unhealthy options one has highly processed, inexpensive food the other has candy. Like the Ted talk explained it’s not hard to change this. In the movie “Super Size Me” there is a short “report” for lack of a better word, on a disciplinary school that had decided to serve only healthy food. The school partnered with a all natural kitchen in the town. They noticed that the students emotions were actually affected by the healthy food, they actually became happier and more energy. The movie didn’t explain how, but it said that they that the healthy food was actually cheaper.

If SLA could partner with local grocery stores like Food For All in Mt. Airy, we could create a similar healthy lunch program. The Ted talk also explained that we need to start to educate the youth about where their food comes from etc. SLA already has a small garden by the river but what if we started an urban farm on the roof? If we did this, we could provide the SLA student body with fresh locally grown healthy food.

How might we get parents to understand and control the amount of food they're children eat?

How might we get America to eat healthier foods?

How might we as a school change the world?

How might this epidemic of fast food affect our future?

What role does food play inside of SLA?

Posted by Sieanna Williams in MUSEXP-009 on
In SLA, we have breakfast every morning and lunch every afternoon. SLA is a community of students engaging in the SLA core values: Inquiry, Research, Collaboration, Presentation and Reflection to enhance knowledge as well as cooperation skills. Everyone is familiar with the 'have a balanced breakfast every morning' saying. Mr. Sherif explained in class one day, that every morning, SLA provides a well balanced, nutritious breakfast for student to eat before class starts. This helps us with the necessary energy we need for class, as well as the important nutrients our bodies need and keeping us from starving or munching on chips and soda and candy because we hadn't eaten breakfast earlier. Lunch works the same way. It's important to have three meals a day, so SLA takes care of breakfast and lunch. So in terms of food playing a role of SLA, its role is to provide students with the right nutrients to maintain a healthy system as well as enough energy to keep us up and engaged throughout the day.

Why does food matter

Posted by Jaazaniah Hayes in MUSEXP-009 on
Food matters because if we didn't eat we would die. Food is very important, and it is essential for everyone. Certain foods can give you diseases, and stomach viruses. Eating lots of fast foods, can cause death. So therefore certain foods can be the death of people.

Obesity: TED Talk

What role does food play in our lives and in the lives of your community?

Food can be very important in our lives. I believe this because food is in aspect of life that is needed for survival. The types of food that we eat also describe the community we could live in. Types of food define a culture, or classify it. Food in many lives is a privilege. In my home, we're often very lucky to have food, but in times when my family doesn't have much money, we have to do the best we can with the little that we have.

What role does food play in our lives and in the lives of our community?

Food plays a huge role in our lives and effects us immensely everyday. Some people do not realize that what we eat can change our lives and even shorten it. This is why people need to give attention to the quality of food that they eat. Food is supposed to play the role of making sure we stay healthy and not decrease our life span. However this is not happening judging that 2/3 kids are obese and their life span is reduced by ten years.

Food matters because it is what keeps us running all day every day, it gives us energy to do the things that we need to know to get through everyday. To run this world in the perfect circle that we need, Food matters because what you can eat may determine how you live your life, your parents can influence how you eat, what you eat, Different food could also effect how you preform during the day.

TED Talk: Obesity in America

Food matters because it provides us with energy. Food provides entire communities with nutrients and things their bodies need. We all need food in order to survive. We need the good things food can give us, but sometimes we are tempted by things hat are unhealthy. I think that they become really unhealthy once we start to eat it all the time. This is where food goes against us and this has become a problem in the U.S.

Food, is very important in the human society. We need food to survive and to give us energy. However today people are not eating correctly. People are not eating healthy, especially in school. Food matters a lot, but it matters even more if you eat healthy. Eating healthy will help you live up to 10 years longer.
